STMicroelectronics has added support for Zigbee 3.0 to the company’s STM32WB55 range of wireless MCUs.

Zigbee 3.0 is based on Zigbee PRO protocol stack. The support will allow STM32 users access to the interoperability and power-saving features of Zigbee networking.

Zigbee 3.0 was developed to bring together the features of the Zigbee specifications for consumer and industrial applications. The move has increased the drive for consumer and Internet brands to use Zigbee in smart-home products. ST is a member of the Zigbee Alliance board of directors, a council member of the Zigbee Alliance Member Group China (ZMGC), and supportive of the Zigbee Alliance Connected Home over IP (CHIP) project.

The new Zigbee 3.0 software for STM32WB55 includes Exegin’s Zigbee PRO protocol stack, which is included free of charge, and delivered and supported by ST. The stack was used for Exegin products that have been certified as Zigbee Golden Units. It is approved as a reference stack for use by test laboratories. To help developers, ST will offer support for 46 Zigbee 3.0 clusters to assist users quickly establish device capabilities. A further 21 clusters support legacy products.

ST’s range of STM32WB55 MCUs also provide support for Thread and Bluetooth 5.0 along with OTA capability. The 10 STM32WB55 variants provide a choice of package styles and Flash densities from 256Kbyte to 1Mbyte. There will be additional variants released in the next quarter to provide extra flexibility to meet application performance and cost targets. The devices use Arm’s Cortex-M4 with FPU, DSP instructions, and a memory protection unit (MPU) for enhanced application security. The devices also integrate an Arm Cortex-M0+ coprocessor which manages the integrated IEEE 805.15.4 radio. The MCU’s cyber-protection features allow real-time low-layer operations to run smoothly without compromising application execution. The RF transceiver has a link budget of 106dB.

The Zigbee 3.0 software will be included in the STM32CubeWB MCU Package. The package offers embedded software including low-layer (LL) APIs and hardware-abstraction layer (HAL) drivers for STM32WB MCUs, as well as Bluetooth 5.0, Mesh
