Susceptibility to moisture ingress quantified by test system & service
Versaperm (Maidenhead, UK) is a measurement company that offers a system – or, alternatively, a laboratory testing service – to quantify the extent to which a component or product is vulnerable to damage by water vapour permeability. Water vapour penetration can by a significant cause of electronics failure, the company asserts, and measuring it is the first step to a remedy

Electronics fail when water vapour, that can all too easily permeate into any enclosure, casing, fibre or component - then condenses and causes problems. Many successful liquid water barrier materials, such as silicon, cellulose, EVOH or PVOH, are virtually useless when it comes to barriers against vapour - which leads to catastrophic electronic failures.

Versaperm has designed and introduced a new generation of equipment that quantifies this issue for electronics, packaging, materials and enclosures. It can measure the vapour permeability of both complete products and components or material samples, it is both fast and accurate.

The Versaperm system was purpose designed for vapour permeability testing and gives results that are typically accurate in the parts per million (PPM) range and sometimes into PPB. It can measure multiple components, material samples, seals or enclosures at a time. Environmental conditions can be controlled including temperature, pressure, partial pressure and humidity. The system can also work with virtually any gas or vapour including water vapour, hydrocarbons, solvents, and CO 2.

Versaperm also offers a laboratory service for companies that only need to test samples on an irregular basis.
